Recently, a canonical change of field variables was proposed that converts the Yang-Mills Lagrangian into an MHV-rules Lagrangian, i.e. one whose tree level Feynman diagram expansion generates CSW rules. We solve the relations defining the canonical transformation, to all orders of expansion in the new fields, yielding simple explicit holomorphic expressions for the expansion coefficients. We use these to confirm explicitly that the three, four and five point vertices are proportional to MHV...

It is shown that the $N$-dark soliton solutions of the integrable discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger (IDNLS) equation are given in terms of the Casorati determinant. The conditions for reduction, complex conjugacy and regularity for the Casorati determinant solution are also given explicitly. The relationship between the IDNLS and the relativistic Toda lattice is discussed.

The security of a deterministic quantum scheme for communication, namely the LM05 [1], is studied in presence of a lossy channel under the assumption of imperfect generation and detection of single photons. It is shown that the scheme allows for a rate of distillable secure bits higher than that pertaining to BB84 [2]. We report on a first implementation of LM05 with weak pulses.

Concurrence and further entanglement quantifyers can be computed explicitly for channels of rank two if representable by just two Kraus operators. Almost all details are available for the subclass of rank two 1-qubit-channels. There is a simple geometric picture beyond, explaining nicely the role of anti-linearity.

As devices are reduced in size, interfaces start to dominate electrical transport making it essential to be able to describe reliably how they transmit and reflect electrons. For a number of nearly perfectly lattice-matched materials, we calculate from first-principles the dependence of the interface transparency on the crystal orientation. Quite remarkably, the largest anisotropy is predicted for interfaces between the prototype free-electron materials silver and aluminium for which a massive...

We have studied mixtures of fermionic $^{40}$K and bosonic $^{87}$Rb quantum gases in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We observe that an increasing admixture of the fermionic species diminishes the phase coherence of the bosonic atoms as measured by studying both the visibility of the matter wave interference pattern and the coherence length of the bosons. Moreover, we find that the attractive interactions between bosons and fermions lead to an increase of the boson density in the lattice...

The statistical properties of heart beat intervals of 130 long-term surface electrocardiogram recordings during atrial fibrillation (AF) are investigated. We find that the distribution of interbeat intervals exhibits a characteristic exponential tail, which is absent during sinus rhythm, as tested in a corresponding control study with 72 healthy persons. The rate of the exponential decay lies in the range 3-12 Hz and shows diurnal variations. It equals, up to statistical uncertainties, the...

In this paper we give a classification of parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbb{C}$ that satisfy two properties. The first property is Lynch's sufficient condition for the vanishing of certain Lie algebra cohomology spaces for generalized Whittaker modules associated with the parabolic subalgebra and the second is that the moment map of the cotangent bundle of the corresponding generalized flag variety be birational onto its image. We will call this condition the moment map...

This study incorporated virtual height traces measured by ionosondes directly into an objective analysis (OA) algorithm. The OA algorithms ingest available data sets to construct coherent maps that represent the larger scale behavior of the ionosphere. A forward model which calculates the virtual height profile form a given electron density distribution was developed and incorporated into the Ionospheric Data Assimilation Three Dimensional (IDA3D) OA algorithm. In addition, IDA3D was modified...

The condition for pressure isotropy, for spherically symmetric gravitational fields with charged and uncharged matter, is reduced to a recurrence equation with variable, rational coefficients. This difference equation is solved in general using mathematical induction leading to an exact solution to the Einstein field equations which extends the isotropic model of John and Maharaj. The metric functions, energy density and pressure are well behaved which suggests that this model could be used to...

A consistent SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian is constructed which incorporates vector meson and baryon decuplet degrees of freedom. The corresponding Bethe-Salpeter approximation predicts the existence of an isoscalar spin-parity ${3/2}^-$ $K^*N$ bound state (strangeness +1) with a mass around 1.7--1.8$ $GeV. It is the highest hypercharge state of an antidecuplet SU(3) representation and it is unstable through $K^*$ decay. The estimated width of this...

Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with field of fractions $K$ containing the $p$-th roots of unity. This paper is concerned with semi-stable models of $p$-cyclic covers of the projective line $C \la \PK$. We start by providing a new construction of a semi-stable model of $C$ in the case of an equidistant branch locus. If the cover is given by the Kummer equation $Z^p=f(X_0)$ we define what we called the monodromy polynomial ${\mathcal L}(Y)$ of...

OGLE-2004-BLG-343 was a microlensing event with peak magnification A_{max}=3000+/-1100, by far the highest-magnification event ever analyzed and hence potentially extremely sensitive to planets orbiting the lens star. Due to human error, intensive monitoring did not begin until 43 minutes after peak, at which point the magnification had fallen to A~1200, still by far the highest ever observed. As the light curve does not show significant deviations due to a planet, we place upper limits on the...

Using the NH\3 (6,6) transition, which samples dense ($\sim 10^{5}$) molecular gas with an energy above ground of 412 K, we find hot gas at high velocities (--142 to --210 km s$^{-1}$) associated with the central 2 pc of the Galactic center. This material may be either infalling gas due to shocks or tidal stripping, or possibly gas swept from the nuclear region. We identify two high-velocity features, which we call the Southern Runner and the Cap, and correlate these features with others...

We discuss the formation of globules in planetary nebulae, typified by those observed in the Helix Nebula. We show that the properties of the globules, their number, mass, separation, and overall geometry strongly support a scenario in which globules are formed by the fragmentation of a swept-up shell as opposed to models in which the knots form in the AGB wind. We show that the RT or other instabilities which lead to the break-up of shells formed in the nebulae by fast winds or ionization...

A special case of the relativistic Doppler effect, which occurs when light reflects from a moving mirror, is discussed. The classic formula for the Doppler shift is derived in a fully non-relativistic fashion using basic facts from geometry. The derivation does not involve Lorentz transformations, length contractions and time dilations, and therefore is conceptually simpler than the standard derivations in physics textbooks. This discussion can be useful for teaching introductory physics and...

Have Gun a Will Travel was a popular American Western television series that aired between November 23, 1958, and November 22, 1960. There were 106 episode broadcasts on CBS. It was the only significant radio show that originated on television, many of the episodes having been adapted from television programs broadcast earlier, though some were original to radio, and it was also one of the last radio dramas featuring continuing characters. John Dehner played Paladin and Ben Wright usually (but...

We construct an invariant J_M of integral homology spheres M with values in a completion \hat{Z[q]} of the polynomial ring Z[q] such that the evaluation at each root of unity \zeta gives the the SU(2) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant \tau_\zeta(M) of M at \zeta. Thus J_M unifies all the SU(2) Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of M. As a consequence, \tau_\zeta(M) is an algebraic integer. Moreover, it follows that \tau_\zeta(M) as a function on \zeta behaves like an ``analytic function''...

Arrays of identical limit-cycle oscillators have been used to model a wide variety of pattern-forming systems, such as neural networks, convecting fluids, laser arrays, and coupled biochemical oscillators. These systems are known to exhibit rich collective behavior, from synchrony and traveling waves to spatiotemporal chaos and incoherence. Recently, Kuramoto and his colleagues reported a strange new mode of organization--here called the chimera state--in which coherence and incoherence exist...

Blue phases of cholesteric liquid crystals offer a spectacular example of naturally occurring disclination line networks. Here we numerically solve the hydrodynamic equations of motion to investigate the response of three types of blue phases to an imposed Poiseuille flow. We show that shear forces bend and twist and can unzip the disclination lines. Under gentle forcing the network opposes the flow and the apparent viscosity is significantly higher than that of an isotropic liquid. With...

In a recent breakthrough, [Bshouty et al., 2005] obtained the first passive-learning algorithm for DNFs under the uniform distribution. They showed that DNFs are learnable in the Random Walk and Noise Sensitivity models. We extend their results in several directions. We first show that thresholds of parities, a natural class encompassing DNFs, cannot be learned efficiently in the Noise Sensitivity model using only statistical queries. In contrast, we show that a cyclic version of the Random...
